Mission/Job Description for Public Policy Intern

Brea Chamber of Commerce

To provide a prolific presence for the Brea Chamber in the public policy arena by effectively representing Brea Chamber members, taking relevant and timely positions on legislation and public policy, and attending city council and planning commission meetings when relevant. To distribute timely Action Alerts to members, plan relevant and well-attended law-maker events and meetings, coordinate logistics for events with a high level of attention to detail and driving robust participation, and to write compelling and well-researched articles on public policy issues align with Brea Chamber priorities. Provide effective facilitation and administrative support for the Brea Chamber Government Affairs Committee.

Reports to: Brea Chamber of Commerce, President/CEO

Salary: Hourly, part-time, $15.50 to $17.00 per hour

Location: 1 Civic Center Circle, Second Floor, Brea, CA 92821

Outcomes

1. Drive the timely sign-on to letters of support or opposition

a. Ensure alignment with Legislative Platform

b. Ensure support of CEO

c. Keep informed though various relevant partner communications

d. Keep informed of legislation running through the process

e. Maintain a current Legislative Score Card for the Chamber

2. Drive the timely and compelling issuance of Action Alerts to Chamber members

a. Ensure alignment with Legislative Platform

b. Ensure support of CEO

c. Keep informed through various relevant partner communications

3. Facilitate timely and robust Government Affairs Committee meetings

a. Establish regular meeting schedule

b. Create timely and relevant agenda

c. Provide staff, clerical and administrative support to the committee

d. Adequately prep the CEO for committee meetings

4. Research, design and distribute a compelling edition of Advocacy Update to be released on the 4thThursday of every month

a. Collect relevant topics for the newsletter

b. Create a visually compelling and content relevant, timely e-newsletter that encapsulates the most relevant public policy updates that impact our members

5. Plan and execute engaging law-maker events and meetings, providing high-level staffing for the Chamber CEO

a. Establish target list of law-makers for future events

b. Secure potential dates from staff/CEO

c. Coordinate with law-maker reps to establish a date

d. Secure a location and work with event staff on logistics

e. Ensure timely and relevant notification, promotion, and registration for events

f. Ensure adequate documentation of meeting outcomes/results

6. Research and publish relevant and compelling public policy articles on policy topics of import to Brea Chamber’s business community

a. Establish a topic at least once every two months that is driven by member policy priorities, the editorial calendar, and the legislative platform

b. Maintain a focus on current and relevant public policy

c. Utilize respected resources for article content, and site sources at end of article

d. Ensure article approval by CEO, publishing on website, and distribution on social media

7. Provide a professional and well-informed voice for the business community at City Council and Planning Commission meetings

a. Provide public comment for policy issues that impact Chamber members and that align with the Legislative Platform and are approved by the CEO

b. Coordinate public comment from members and Emerging Leaders on relevant issues such as housing and development

c. Take good notes and report out on council meetings attended in the Advocacy Update e-newsletter

8. Integrate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team that shares administrative duties of answering phones, data management, correspondence, customer service, event staffing, and other clerical and administrative support duties as needed, etc.

Job Types: Part-time, Internship

Pay: $15.50 - $17.00 per hour

Expected hours: 16 – 24 per week
