Birch Street Civic Center/Brea Marketplace Crosswalk: Construction Project- August 16 thru September

The Project: The City and Redevelopment Agency have planned a crosswalk enhancement project at the intersection of Birch Street and Civic Center/Marketplace. The improvement consists with replacing the existing crosswalk with decorative concrete. The crosswalk designs will be identical to those at Brea Boulevard and Birch Street in Brea Downtown, without the stamped asphalt and blue color in the middle. No General Funds are being spent on this project.
Impacts: Traffic lanes and access into Civic Center/Embassy Suites will remain open, but will be impacted. Please take note of all construction signs and drive safely. (The project duration is scheduled for August 16 through the end of September.)
As part of the project, the entrance into the Marketplace Shopping Center at Marketplace/Civic Center intersection will be temporarily close from August 16-September 10. Businesses have already been notified.
Why a Crosswalk? The Marketplace Shopping Center’s recent transformation which is anchored by the two-story Target store is a major improvement to the area. The center now adds the variety of shopping services in the district defined by the Brea Mall, Embassy Suites, Civic and Cultural Center and Brea Downtown. One of the Brea Redevelopment Agency goals in its Five Year Implementation Plan is to link these centers of activity and make the pedestrian elements stronger. A distinctive crosswalk helps to visually tie the two areas together and encourage pedestrian traffic.
Regency Centers, the owner of the Market Place, did their part by adding a continuous walkway with the enhanced landscape elements on Birch Street, including public art and benches. The Redevelopment Agency is now contributing by adding decorative crosswalks at the intersection linking the Civic and Cultural Center and Embassy Suites to the Market Place center.
Thank you in advance for your patience during this construction project.
