Congressman Gary Miller announces his departure from Orange County
The California Redistricting Commission made upcoming congressional races through out the state of California very difficult for some law makers, including those in Orange County. Putting two of the County’s long time Republican members of Congress, Gary Miller and Ed Royce, against one another in a battle over what is going to be the 39th Congressional District (the new district for the city of Brea). But before the campaign season even gets into full swing, one member has bowed out of the race.
With the announcement of Congressman Jerry Lewis’ retirement this morning, the 31st Congressional District in the Inland Empire became an open seat. While Congressman David Drier was rumored to run in the district, Congressman Gary Miller announced his intention to depart Orange County and run in the 31st Congressional District which is made up entirely of Inland Empire cities. Miller has strong ties to the Inland Empire and the move eliminates what some thought would be a huge show down over the 39th District seat between Royce and Miller. While the majority of the 39th contained areas current in Miller’s 42nd Congressional District, Royce was hitting the campaign trail hard and determined to remain a north Orange County Congressman. As Brea prepares to say farewell to the Representative we have known for the past decade, we are eager to see what the November election will hold for our city.
