California Supreme Court rules on Senate Maps
Today, the California Supreme Court ruled that the State Senate lines drawn by the citizens redistricting commission will be used for the coming election.
A group lead by State Senator Mimi Walters (Laguna Niguel - R), Fairness and Accountability in Redistricting (FAIR), has put forth a statewide ballot initiative challenging the legality of the redistricting maps. But with the initiative not making it to the ballot until November, the same time Senators will be running for election, a decision had to be made as to which districts lawmakers would run in. The signatures to place the initiative on the ballot are in the verification process, although initial reports are positive that it will succeed.
The new maps give Democrats a very good chance of reaching a two-thirds super majority needed to raise taxes; FAIR supporters have maintained that the maps were drafted with just that intent. The Supreme Court has previously rejected a FAIR lawsuit challenging the lines. The Citizens Redistrict Commission has maintained throughout the entire process that the lines are legal and sound and that FAIR is serving “partisan self-interest”.
